Paul is a co-owner of BWL Group, a Director of BWL Legal and Co-Head of the Construction & Projects Team.
Paul commenced his legal career in 2007 in the Mining & Resources team of a global law firm specialising in land access and Native Title Act matters. He spent 8 years as an in-house lawyer in Australia and Singapore before his return to the United Kingdom and the establishment of BWL.
He is a non-contentious construction and projects lawyer with a detailed understanding of standard form contracts e.g. JCT, NEC, FIDIC and others. He advises clients involved in strategic infrastructure projects including the national broadband fibre rollout and HS2. Paul also supports a large number of property developers in structuring projects including different forms of joint venture and providing advice on contractor procurement, the engagement of professional consultants, construction contracts and the preparation of ancillary documents including collateral warranties, performance bonds and guarantees.
Paul has a LLB (Hons) from Lancaster University, a Masters of Commercial and Resources Law and a Graduate Diploma in Legal Practice from the University of Western Australia and a Graduate Diploma in Applied Corporate Governance. He qualified as a solicitor in Western Australia and his career has taken him from Perth to Sydney to Singapore and back to the United Kingdom.
Paul’s experience includes:
- Providing RAG Reviews and support with contract negotiation on numerous NEC3, NEC4 and bespoke contracts on behalf of tier 1 contractors working on the UK broadband fibre roll out.
- Advising a multinational contractor on various contracts relating to transport infrastructure projects including HS2.
- Providing advice on construction contracts and framework agreements for a global building services contractor.
- Providing advice to a leading UK infrastructure company on contracts and disputes.
- Providing advice on a range of contracts in support of a global mining company’s procurement team.
- Leading negotiations on a number of large gas and electricity supply contracts.
- Developing the contract framework for a large security project for a gold mine in Papua New Guinea.
- Supporting a large number of property developers with joint venture set-up and advice in respect of construction contracts and the appointment of consultants.
- Drafting amendments to standard form contracts and bespoke construction contracts for a range of clients.
