BWL carry out Quantity Surveying Services for Babcock International Group

n this case study, BWL Technical Construction was approached by Babcock International with a requirement for Quantity Surveying to support Babcock International with operations across the Scottish Power Estate.

Clients company name:

Babcock International

Client’s employer industry:

Utilities (power generation)

Scope of work:

BWL’s Technical Services  was approached by Babcock International with a requirement for Quantity Surveying Services, supporting Babcock operations across the Scottish Power (SPEN) estate.

Working on behalf of Scottish Power, Babcock was responsible for the refurbishment of overhead power lines that are 80 Km in length and approximately 400 Kv. The works include upgrades to the power lines and replacement of existing conductors, insulators and fittings to towers and foundations.

BWL was initially engaged to provide a quantity surveyor for discrete packaging works to measure, quantify and calculate the cost of several contractual changes.

The chartered quantity surveyor we appointed on the project is experienced in the main forms of infrastructure contracts including NEC3/4 and FIDIC, as the works formed part of a larger investment by Scottish Power as part of their existing infrastructure. During the project, BWL seconded a chartered Quantity Surveyor into the Babcock team who is also experienced in Power sector projects, as our team member has drawn on the experience while working on a bespoke Scottish power form of contract.

The benefit of working with BWL is that the Technical service team report directly to the Commercial Manager on the project and overall, the role took place over a course of three months from the first request. By working on the Scottish Power network built on our previous experience in the Power sector, where we have previously worked on a National Grid Infrastructure, therefore, allowed BWL to be strengthened our capability in the Power sector.

Benefits:

BWL’s Technical Service team has a dynamic Commercial Team that can in turn work remotely throughout the Scottish boards, however, the work with Babcock International was Geographically challenging but being able to work remotely to deliver the Quantity Surveying service was seen as an added benefit through the strengthen of experience throughout the project.

BWL’s Commercial team have worked closely on a form of bespoke contracts with BWL Legal to gain wider exposure on a range of complex bespoke contracts to further gain knowledge and experience.

Having a Commercial team with diversity and experience allows BWL’ Technical Service time to responsive reaction to start the works on Babcock’s site.
