Success in Mega Projects: How BWL Supports Construction Bids
At BWL Group, we understand that winning mega projects demands more than just technical compliance. It requires a strategic approach, deep sector knowledge, and the ability to deliver compelling, compliant, and high-impact submissions under pressure. In this article, we showcase three major projects where our expert bid team played a critical role in securing, or positioning our clients to secure high-value contracts in the infrastructure and transport sectors.
Case Study 1: Foynes to Limerick Road – Adare Bypass Design and Construction
Client: Confidential
Sector: Infrastructure & Rail
Contract Value: €150 million
Scope:
This contract covered the design and construction of 7km of new motorway between Croagh and Adare, including a 200m three-span bridge over the River Maigue and four additional river crossings. With completion required ahead of the Ryder Cup at Adare Manor in 2027, the project demanded robust planning and execution.
Our Support:
BWL provided end-to-end bid management and writing support for this significant NEC4 Option C infrastructure tender. We analysed the contract documents to produce detailed storyboards aligned with client drivers and scoring mechanisms. Throughout the bid process, we collaborated closely with the contractor to develop technical content across design, construction methodology, carbon reduction strategies, and risk management.
We applied APMP best practice in reviewing and refining responses, while also delivering graphic design support. This included the creation of CVs and organisation charts aligned with brand guidelines, resulting in a professional and persuasive final submission.
Case Study 2: Operational Boundary Fencing and Vegetation
Client: Confidential
Sector: Infrastructure & Rail
Contract Value: Estimated £16–£32 million (8-year term)
Scope:
This bid focused on the inspection, maintenance, and replacement of urban rail boundary fencing, as well as vegetation management across a major underground transport network. The contract, split over two lots, required extensive mobilisation planning, workforce resourcing, and demonstration of compliance with strict operational standards.
Our Support:
As labour resource bid specialists, BWL managed the full bid lifecycle. Led by CEO Michael Lee and Senior Bid Writer David Ralph, our team delivered over 20 detailed technical responses. We coordinated SMEs across departments to capture accurate, relevant content, and worked intensively over the holiday period to meet deadlines.
Our structured approach included document reviews, content gap analysis, interview schedules, and comprehensive storyboarding. We also added significant value through design—developing two A4 pages and two PowerPoint slides filled with custom visuals such as Gantt charts, organograms, and risk management process diagrams.
Outcome:
While the contract award is pending, our involvement elevated the submission quality and left the client with a repeatable framework for similar opportunities. Our role extended beyond writing—we acted as trusted advisors, project managers, and design partners to ensure a standout bid.
Case Study 3: Strategic Nuclear Infrastructure Bidding Support
BWL Group is proud to have built a collaborative partnership with a leading tier 1 infrastructure contractor, delivering expert bid management support within the highly specialised nuclear infrastructure sector. Our collaboration has consistently demonstrated the strength of structured bidding processes, clear strategic alignment, and the in-depth technical expertise required to successfully navigate complex tender submissions.
Our dedicated involvement has included comprehensive bid management, detailed storyboarding, targeted SME collaboration, red reviews, and evaluation (scoring) of responses before submission. This has ensured the contractor’s submissions fully reflect their technical excellence and innovative approach. Through our joint efforts, we have successfully enhanced bid quality and alignment to client objectives, reinforcing their position as a leader in nuclear infrastructure projects.
Whether it’s a €150 million motorway development or an eight-year urban rail maintenance contract, BWL Group provides the expertise, structure, and support needed to win. Our team brings clarity to complex tenders, adds value through strategic content and visual impact, and ensures that every submission reflects the full capabilities of our clients.
